March 2007 The aim of Jana Suwaya in the UK is to raise awareness and funds for Jana Suwaya's ongoing projects in Sri Lanka, which can broadly be classified into two areas - the building and maintenance of educational and health centres and the expansion of the zero-interest microfinance scheme.
Jana Suwaya in the UK was formed in March 2007 after the founder of Jana Suwaya - Sajith Premadasa, the MP for Hambantota, visited the UK in order to raise the profile of his scheme. His inspirational talk catalysed the formation of the UK-based fundraising branch of Jana Suwaya.
Since its formation in March 2007 Jana Suwaya in the UK has raised £ 15,000.00 through the donations of well-wishers. This translates to 3 million Sri Lankan rupees and will be channelled into the Sri Lanka based zero-interest microfinance scheme, providing first loans for 150 families in the district of Kalutara.
These are early days. We hope that the future will allow us to bring hope to the rural communities of Sri Lanka - and help people to help themselves.
